Berries World of Learning School (Yishun)
Description
In 1993, the first Berries World of Learning School was founded with a mission to teach Chinese to children in a way that is as exciting as it is educational. We believe in the power of a Fun-Filled, Multi-Sensory approach. Through our innovative and interactive teaching methods, we blend the worlds of fun and education, crafting an experience we like to call ‘Serious Fun’. Over the past few decades, Berries has grown to over 20 outlets across the island. As we move forward, we anticipate continuing our mission to nurture the children of tomorrow.
At Berries, our vision extends beyond just mastering the Chinese language. We also instill essential life values in children. Through the journey of learning Chinese, we hope to inspire children to become better versions of themselves everyday, to radiate more light and warmth in the world they grow up in today.
Berries World of Learning School is dedicated to creating an educational ‘paradise’ that transcends conventional language learning. Our goal is to curate a holistic and fulfilling experience for children by unravelling the mystery and beauty of Chinese language and culture.

In February 2023, my son attended his 5th lesson of term 1 (P1). To give a background, my son isn't the usual sit down and listen type of child and I... Read more usual sit down and listen type of child and I understand that. I also felt apprehensive because I am worried that he might hinder lessons. However he is a child who is curious about things and still loves learning. My aim of sending him there wasn't for academic excellence but for him to get exposure to Chinese which he isn't so good at and to enjoy Chinese language since many people told me that berries is fun. So my worst nightmare happened after I asked the teacher for some feedback about my son after the 5th lesson. She brought me out, told me he is just WASTING HIS TIME, that 1 to 1 tuition is better for his academic excellence, and that the assistant teacher had to spent all her time with him and cannot help other students in class. I can perfectly understand that I am hindering the progress of the class and also disadvantaging other students. Next, she told me that "your son has been cutting eraser in class and not paying attention" and that they couldn't tear him away from it. In that moment I felt defeated and embarrassed and heartbroken. After breaking down my thoughts/feelings, I realized that (in my own opinion) 1) the teachers were not equipped to handle a child playing with an eraser and redirect him back to class in a class size of perhaps 10 students. 2) the first thought that came to the teacher's mind was to get him out of the class, go for 1-1 tuition outside and not to consider ways to engage the child. Mind you, it was only the 5th lesson of Term 1. 3) What was so disengaging about the whole lesson (or even all that 5 lessons) such that my son would display this behavior? I am NOT making excuses for my son and I am aware of his negative behaviour. However he is someone who gets excited easily and that if the lesson was engaging or redirection is positive, he will naturally turn his attention to it. In my own opinion: So PSA to all parents, (I am cognizant I'm doing Berries a favour here) do not send your child there if your child isn't someone who behaves within the norm and can take instructions very well. If your child can behave well, please go ahead. Such easy student profiles would make class management easier for the teachers. The school director heard about the whole incident and made a refund possible in my case. I would say she did a good job with regards to the damage control. So I stopped the lessons and she gave me a full refund of the remaining lessons. Also the counter staff ladies are nice, especially May. (hopefully I didn't get her name wrong). In my own opinion, it is just unlucky/upsetting that I have met a teacher who did not genuinely understand/care about my son, or perhaps could not hold on long enough to see a difficult time through, or perhaps did not consider developing herself professionally further to handle a more difficult child. (or perhaps speak to me about what techniques could possibly work with my son) Luckily my son's primary school teacher genuinely cares for him and reports that while my son can sometimes drift off in class, but redirection is always possible and he behaves quite well in school. And also, my son reports to me that his fav subject is Chinese and often (not all the time) scores full marks for his Chinese ting xie.
