Chengzhu Mandarin Centre (Rochester Mall)
Description
Chengzhu Mandarin Centre evolved naturally, as a result of running Mandarin programmes at Julia Gabriel Centre for over 12 years. The time was right to take the next step: to create a wholly Chinese environment where children and their families could be immersed in both language and culture, ensuring holistic, meaningful and long lasting learning experiences. In January 2012, Chengzhu Mandarin Centre was officially born!
Our programmes and nurturing environment immerse students in Chinese language and culture, enabling them to develop a strong foundation in Mandarin and build the confidence to master the language – just as bamboo initially emerges as a fragile shoot and then grows tall and strong in fertile soil.

One of the top 2 mandarin caregiver accompanied playgroups in Singapore out of the ones I've tried (5+ over time for my 2yr old child). Pros +Well paced lesson, it's 2hrs but... Read more for my 2yr old child). Pros +Well paced lesson, it's 2hrs but it doesn't feel that long and the kids don't get bored, as there is a free play break time in their indoor playground and snack time (snacks provided by the school), and activities are well paced. +Room is much more spacious compared to quite a few other providers + Music is either live music via one of the teachers playing the piano or played on the music player, no display of screen time using the phone to play music to the kids. + Minimum 2 teachers - 1 main and 1 assistant. More opportunities for the kids to chat to the teachers. All of the teachers are kind, although do recommend you try different ones to find the right fit. + My child loves the indoor playground, great for releasing energy and increasing attention span for the 2nd half of the class. + They have to ask for the different snacks distributed by the teacher during snack time so this was great for improving speaking skills. + They inform you of the key words that the kids will be learning throughout the term via a pdf. + There's a library for the kids to borrow 1 book each time from, although most of the books are abit old, it's still better than other providers who don't have a library. Cons/ feedback - Main feedback is that Chengzhu's makeup class policy is the most restrictive I've seen: 1 makeup class per term is too little. Not in line with pretty much all other who provide 3+, and for the modern family who needs flexibility due to travel/ sickness etc. It shouldn't be trouble to give more makeup classes since there's usually sessions during the term that aren't full. I think they'd attract alot more signups/ parents continuing if they improved this, as I know other parents deciding to pause whole terms due to small amounts of travel instead of continuing just because they're having to pay for missed lessons. - It would be good if there can be teacher continuity for the younger ages, e.g. for the kids to join a class that has the same teacher from playgroup to N1 to facilitate the transition from accompanied to drop off. Either that, or allow caregivers to accompany for the first couple of classes at N1 so the child can settle in to ease separation anxiety. - Small issue but when class is full with 12 kids it can take a long time to get through the self introductions section at the beginning of class and my child gets bored.

Quality of class totally dependant on the teacher.. From what I observed, overall younger teachers are more compassionate compared to older(in age) senior teachers. With loud voices not necessarily energetic kind but super loud even somewhat overwhelming for parents. Hopefully management can manage and encourage their teachers more and have better welfare for them. Because an unhappy teacher just can't pass on the happy vibe.

We enrolled our daughter in the Chinese enrichment class at Chengzhu (Rochester) because she was struggling with the language and didn’t particularly enjoy the subject. After a few weeks, we’ve... Read more didn’t particularly enjoy the subject. After a few weeks, we’ve seen incredible progress! She is now able to recognize and write Chinese characters, knows her Hanyu Pinyin, and—most importantly—she has developed a genuine interest in learning Chinese. The teachers are patient, and the environment is very engaging. We’re really happy with how much she’s improved and how her attitude towards the subject has changed. Highly recommend Chengzhu at Rochester!
