Read more in primary school which certainly helped as she progressed to secondary education and getting A1 for her O level Chinese. Mrs Ler is patient, dedicated and always gives me good advice in the best interest of my daughter. When my daughter could only do online or have to make other arrangements for tuition, she would always try her best to accommodate and work out a feasible arrangement. My daughter and I are glad that we journeyed with Mrs Ler and the centre for her Chinese learning!

As a parent, I cannot express enough gratitude to Mrs Ler for walking alongside both of my children in their Chinese MOE journey. Our family background is a little unique... Read more Chinese MOE journey. Our family background is a little unique — I am Indonesian-Chinese, my husband is Japanese, and though I studied in Singapore from Sec 1 to 4, Chinese was always my greatest struggle. Despite years of drilling, tuition, and endless memorisation, I only managed a C6 for my O-Level Chinese. Up to this day, my Chinese is still passive — I can recognise many characters but cannot confidently use them. Having gone through this tough experience, I was determined that my children would not face the same painful struggles with Chinese that I did. That’s why, even when we were still living in Jakarta, I placed them in a Taiwanese international school, where Chinese was strong. Later, when we migrated to Singapore, the challenge resurfaced. The system was different — Taiwan uses Traditional Chinese and 注音符号 (Zhuyin), while Singapore MOE uses Simplified Chinese and Hanyu Pinyin. My son, 耀仁, entered Singapore school at Primary 3, and it was not easy to adjust. By God’s grace, we were introduced to Mrs Ler and My Chinese Steps Learning Centre through a parent’s recommendation. That was the turning point. At first, with discipline and persistence, 耀仁 managed to cope well, memorising vocabulary and passing his tests. But as years went by, his dislike for Chinese grew. He cried, resisted going for tuition, and often told me how much he hated the subject. Many times, my anxiety as a parent overwhelmed me, and I would seek advice from Mrs Ler. Every single time, with her calmness, patience, and deep experience, she reassured me. She reminded me not to panic, and assured me that in class, 耀仁 was still coping fine. Her words and guidance became the anchor that carried us through many moments when I wanted to give up. With her encouragement, we pushed through PSLE. He did not achieve an outstanding grade, but he passed — and that was already a huge victory for our family. For secondary school, we continued with Mrs Ler. She has taught 耀仁 since Day 1, and she knows his character, learning style, and limitations inside out. She always knew how to balance expectations, motivate him, and stretch him just enough without breaking his spirit. By Sec 3, I slowly handed over responsibility to my son, letting him manage his learning more independently. My only “help” was to organise his tuition worksheets from Mrs Ler neatly into files for easy revision. As O-Levels drew closer, my anxiety came back again — I even asked Mrs Ler about switching to “Chinese B” at JC. But once again, her wisdom and encouragement strengthened us. She advised us to stay the course in Express Chinese, and reminded me to trust the process. Yesterday, when the O-Level results were released, my prayer was simple: just let him pass. The school’s prediction was C5, and indeed, he achieved that. For many, it may not seem like a top grade. But to us, it was a miracle and a huge blessing. Why? Because beyond the grade, our greatest joy is this: 耀仁 no longer hates Chinese to the point of breaking down or refusing to touch it. He persevered, completed his journey, and can now move forward to focus on his other subjects without carrying trauma from Chinese. This outcome would never have been possible without Mrs Ler. Her steady hand, her persistence, and her genuine care for her students carried us through the ups and downs. We are truly grateful, truly blessed, and forever thankful for her dedication. To any parent who feels anxious, worried, or hopeless about their child’s Chinese learning journey — please know that with a teacher like Mrs Ler, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. 🙏 Thank you, Mrs Ler, for everything you have done for our family.

Read more to know this through my friend who is a teacher. My son enjoys the lessons when he attended the classes in mid primary. Even when he is in sec school, he wants to continue with the tuition classes at MCS with Ms Moh. Thankful for the good results he received in his mid-yr exams in Sec 3. The tuition centre makes effort to accommodate the student's schedule and I appreciate the centre's efforts to co-ordinate.
